Kanes is a major tea production house in Shizuoka.
Shizuoka is a region with many valleys south-east of Mt.Fuji and is Japans largest tea production area.
Unlike the huge tea gardens in Northern India the Shizuoka region has thousands of rather small individual farmers. They cooperate with tea houses like Kanes on cultivating and harvesting and deliver their tea leaves as "aracha", a semi-processed product. The tea house acts as a refinery, processing the leaves into finest tea specialities.
The tea master
In the refinery, the tea master receives the aracha cultivated and prepared as agreed earlier. He then brings out the flavour of the tea using a unique mixture of art, science and experience.
At Kanes Tea, the CEO Yukika Komatsu is one of only
37 certified tea valuers in Japan. He cooperates with the contracted farmers along the river Ōj.
The farmers
In Shizuoka, especially along the river Ōj farmers grow tea since generations. A deep respect and responsibility for the soil and the plants characterizes the family businesses.
Tea is grown with Japanese thoroughness and rigid quality controls. The suppliers of Kanes tea operate without pesticides and increasingly concentrate on organic farming.
